Letty Lucas honoured as President Elect of Tennis
Ireland
Congratulations to Letty Lucas who was elected President of Tennis
Ireland at the AGM held at the National Tennis Forum. Letty will
take up this prestigious post from 1st April 2009 for two years.
This is a great honour for Letty and reflects the high regard she
is held in not only at Ulster Branch level but throughout Ireland.
Furthermore if her commitment and enthusiasm for making tennis fun
for all at Downshire is anything to go by her tenure as President
of Tennis Ireland will be a most positive and successful one.
John Canning enjoys international success
On the Seniors circuit, John Canning won his first ever ITF Singles
Tournament in the Algarve in early November. This win together with
ranking points gained in reaching two other singles finals in Gerona
and Estoril and a semi-final in Madrid, leapfrogged John to 94 in
the 2008 year end World Rankings age group.
John also won Mens Doubles and Mixed Doubles titles in Barcelona
and Lisbon respectively during 2008.
Social Events
A very successful family quiz night was held at The Pheasant on
25th April with 70 members attending raising £500 for charity.
Other events during 2008 included a well attended McMillan Coffee
Morning and a Ladies Night in November hosted at the club. The evening
featured a great display of jewellery, handbags, Christmas decorations
and beauty products for the ladies to sample and buy.
Downshire Ladies…on
tour!
In April & May 2008 two groups of Downshire ladies armed with
tennis racquets went on tour to Portugal. It would be fair to say
that whilst the tennis was important-there were many other “highlights”
of the trips which are best kept secret as they say with any good
trip there will be “No Tour Talk”.

Anne Sloan was appointed Club Captain for the incoming
year of 2009 at the recent November AGM
Court Etiquette
When entering or leaving the club please have respect
for players on court by diming your headlights.
If you are last to leave the premises please make
sure that the clubhouse is secure (windows closed, lights off and
doors locked) and that you lock the entrance gate behind you.
