Wooden Racket Tennis Tournament
Boxing Day then saw John Foster host his 1973
Wooden Racket Tennis Tournament where I was transformed into
Tony Roche with my wooden Dunlop Maxfli racket, tight shorts,
Fila Aertex and white Greenflash tennis plimsolls. Quite a
sight to behold I can tell you. I partnered the very lovely
Evonne Gollagong aka Judith Mills.
We faced strong opposition from Jimmy Connors and Billie Jean
King, Rod Laver and Margaret Court, Illie Nastase and Chris
Evert. However, the eventual winners were the feisty pairing
of Arthur Ashe and Virginia Wade aka Mr Patrick Mills and
Miss Emily Beatty. Thank you for organising such a great afternoon
John.

Juniors’ Table Quiz
The week before Christmas we had over 100 Senior
and Junior members in attendance for the Juniors’ Table
Quiz at Lisnagarvey Hockey Club where a dozen teams competed
to be 2011 Downshire Champions. The Quiz Master was none other
than our multi talented Club Coach Stuart McQuitty. On arrival,
our new senior captain Patrick Beatty, randomly joined the
Captain Fantastico’s Team with the new junior captain
Wee Will, Andy, Alice, Big Will, David Mills, Kumico and Alex
Mitchell. You can therefore imagine the surprise when after
10 rounds of highly intensive questioning by Stuart that the
two new captains were crowned Champions. However, the biggest
winner on the night was Downshire Tennis Club as in excess
of £800 was raised. How magnificent was that performance! |

| Strategic Plan |
The Plan seeks to continue our success in
developing the Club’s programme to increase capacity
by building two new covered courts at Old Coach Road; beside
the football club. These courts will be covered by a seasonal
bubble from 1stOctober to 31st March each year, enabling play
in all weather conditions. These new courts will augment our
existing courts at Park Street and will allow us to continue
to develop our club programme for the benefit of our members,
future generations and the community we serve.
All members will shortly receive a letter
from the Club Chairman and committee seeking your support
in the proposed development. With this letter you will also
receive e a copy of a presentation to highlight the Background;
Rationale for Development; Site Options, Evaluation &
Costs; Project phasing and financial plan; Levy, membership
growth and funding options.
