Inter-County
success
DOWN WIN ZONE 2
Congratulations to 4 club players, Hilary Emerson, Jill Rennie,
Liz Rodgers and Chris Stanley (captain)who were drafted in at the
11th hour to represent Down in the Inter-County Championships at
Portrush on Saturday 3rd June.
To say some players were nervous is an understatement
in the extreme. Hilary was heard to offer to clean windows, scrub
floors etc... rather than continue on the journey.
But, wait for it, what a fairy tale it turned out to be.
The first match played was against Fermanagh. Jill
and Hilary came from 5 - 0 down to win a nail biting clincher 7
-6. What a start. Liz drew the short straw and had to play singles.
She lost 9 - 4 to a very good young player. Chris teamed up with
John Duncan from Bangor and faced the strength of the mighty John
Maguire and Michael Duffy. We'll keep that score under wraps.
At the end of this first tie Down had 32 points and Fermanagh had
33.
The next County we came up against were Tyrone and
we won 48 games.
Finally we had to play Armagh.
Going into the final match Down had 73 points while Armagh had 75.
The ladies doubles (Jill and Hilary)were the first to finish and
they played a great match winning 8 - 5. The mixed was soon finished
. 7 - 6 to Down. The men's doubles ( Chris and John) won 8 - 5.
Down won the mens singles and then Liz Rodgers, who played the longest
match of the tie, completed the success with a great win over another
very good young player.
Down won Zone 2 by 11 points
and are now promoted to Zone 1 for 2007. A big thank you and congratulations
to our 4 club members who joined players from Newcastle and Bangor
to make up the winning team. Well done to all concerned.
